Prayer

Liberton Kirk Celtic Daily Devotions – January 2017

Key Verse from the Bible

‘Give ear, O God, and hear…. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!’              Daniel 9 verses 18-19

So a New Year begins! And a new season – of Looking UPWARD together.
It is an opportunity to start the year with a God-ward vision in the company of daring DANIEL and then briefly HOSEA, JOEL, AMOS, JONAH, MICAH, NAHUM before we end the month in the company of good old complaining HABBAKUK – yes – all of them in the same month!!

We are encouraged to listen for His voice as these prophets start us off on our ‘rhythm of devotion’ in 2017.

The Devotions are but one way to feed on God’s Word in the morning, at midday, in the evening… to pray with Him continually through your day and even to share with others the treasures or hurdles you discover.

The Church website and Facebook page (even on a handy mobile) provide a fuller daily devotional page. However it all follows the pattern below which the information given fits into, based on the Kirk’s origins of the Celtic and Northumbrian traditions.

Morning
Reading and Meditation on the content and Prayer of response

Midday

A Prayer for the Month

A Prayer for the Month of January

Gracious God,
Where we are weak, show us.
Where we are complacent, challenge us.
Where we are faithless, rebuke us.
Where we are wrong, forgive us.
In this new year
Grant us a mind to know You,
A heart to love You,
A spirit to serve You
A voice raised in prayer to You
And a life to proclaim You.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen!

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be Your Name.
Your kingdom come
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Now and for ever

Amen.
